Lençois Maranhenses National Park, a coastal dune field that is flooded with fresh water lakes during the January to May rainy season. Strong prevailing winds from the East mobilize the barchan dunes during the dry season and, combined with the equatorial sun, evaporate the lakes and prevent permanent vegetation from taking root. Photos taken near Lagoa Azul (blue lake) which is a popular area for day tourists as it is only a half hour by car from the nearest town, Barreirinhas.

Solid winning winds from the East activate the barchan hills amid the dry season and, joined with the central sun, vanish the lakes and keep perpetual vegetation from flourishing.
